In case you’ve missed it, here’s a picture of Ray Park as Snake Eyes for the upcoming live-action G.I. Joe movie.

When did rubber costumes become the default for movies adapted from comic books? At least it doesn’t have nipples.
G.I. Joe opens August 7, 2009.

I’m becoming less and less interested in director Stephen Sommers’ 2009 GI Joe film, but there is some good news. Chris Eccleston has been cast as Destro, Ray Park as Snake Eyes and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Heavy Duty. Plot details are scarce, but the rivalry between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow is expected to be a large part of the film.
In non-movie news:
- EA will be developing a game based on 2009’s movie. The Simpsons Game aside, there haven’t been too many great movie-based games, but we’ll reserve judgement.
- Devil’s Due lost the comic rights last month to either IDW or Marvel. I don’t read this current batch of comics. Any readers here? Is this a good or bad development?
Since we’re on the topic, here’s a casting update since our last related post. Anyone else notice that Lady J and Cobra Commander are missing? Online fears are that she was replaced with Cover Girl. And perhaps he’s contemplating running for president again?
- Heavy Duty - Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje
- Destro - Chris Eccleston
- Rex - Joseph Gordon-Levitt
- Cover Girl - Karolína Isela Kurková
- Storm Shadow - Byung-hun Lee
- The Baroness - Sienna Miller
- Scarlet - Rachel Nichols
- Snake Eyes - Ray Park
- General Hawk - Dennis Quaid
- Breaker - Said Taghmaoui
- Duke Hauser - Channing Tatum
- Zartan - Arnold Vosloo
- Ripcord - Marlon Wayons
Now you know! And knowing is…ah, forget it.
Ain’t It Cool News is reporting that Channing Tatum (Step Up, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints) has been cast as Duke in the upcoming GI Joe movie.
I tried to find a picture of Channing Tatum that made him look right for Duke, but all I found were shots of him in his underwear (looking far too “pretty” to be in GI Joe at all - well, maybe as Cobra Commander) and shots where he looked 17 years old. Neither fits with the Duke in my head, who is older, more battle-hardened and, if I may be frank, just a sexy daddy.
I already had my doubts about the casting for this movie, but I was holding out. I’m dating myself here, but I really liked the Cobra La storylines of the animated series and was hoping for a BSG-style reboot, a more sophisticated take on that universe.
I’ve got nothing against Channing Tatum, but this news (along with the other casting choices barring Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Heavy Duty) tells me that this movie is intended for the MTV-set, not me.

Update: This rumor has been denied. The rest of the list stands. Via The Movie Blog

Latino Review has reported a rumor that Dominic West (Theron in 300) may be cast as Destro in 2009’s GI Joe live action film. I don’t know how credible this is, but I thought it was a good time to do a quick roundup of the confirmed and rumored cast so far.
