I was trolling the submissions for the Evil League of Evil over at the Doctor Horrible Fan Site site, hoping to find a couple of gay villains. Some of the actors may have been gay, but I didn’t find any characters who were explicitly.

DISCLAIMER: Perhaps you’re scream-thinking, “None of them are gay or straight! They’re just characters!” 1) Take a deep breath. 2) Though a lot of them are neutral on this point, there are a quite a few references in there to the evil-doers’ girlfriends, boyfriends, wives and husbands.

I wasn’t particularly looking for “Mr. Queer” or “Super-Homo”, but just a character who might happen to be gay, bi or any fun variation thereof. But look! I found something even better: Bear Arms.

Joel Watson, the creator of the geek-tastic HijiNKS ENSUE, bases the characters in his web-comic on himself and his real-life friends Josh and Eli. Bear Arms is Josh’s Evil League alter-ego. Click the image (or here) to see Joel and Eli as the Macromancer and el LOLuchador.

You know that we appreciate gaiety in our geekery, but HijiNKS ENSUE is worth a look even without the addition of Josh. Not only do you get the comic series at the site, but Joel is also chronicling his attempt to make a living by turning his passion into a full-time job. I could use a few pointers on that myself, and I wish Joel the best of luck.

This Saturday was National Coming Out Day, though that’s an odd name for an increasingly international observance.

We’ve both been out since the Carter administration, so in lieu of coming out (again), we’re celebrating with this list of our favorite out actors in sci fi and horror. And just think, not too long ago we would have had trouble coming up with a list half this size!

As usual, pick your favorites and tell us in the comments who we might have overlooked.
