I would normally stick this in our FriendFeed and call it a day, but I was curious to get other people’s thoughts on Watchmen character Ozymandias.  MTV’s Splash Page quotes actor Matthew Goode, who plays Ozymandias in 2009’s Watchmen film:

“What he’s about is trying to save the world. … He’s also incredibly fit. He’s possibly the greatest physical specimen on the planet.”

“And yeah,” added Goode, “he’s possibly homosexual.”

To be honest, I never really thought much about Ozymandias’ sexuality, but there are some aspects of the character that could be read as “gay”, including some stereotypical ones used only by those with very primitive gaydar.

  • His idol is Alexander the Great.
  • Bubastis. Gays in media love the cats, but here’s a recent NY Times article on straight men who love their cats too. Perhaps too much? [Adam, I'm looking at you.]
  • He kept his intelligence “in the closet”, you might say, by pretending to be a mediocre student.
  • Those clothes!
  • As Goode said, he’s “possibly the greatest physical specimen on the planet.”
  • He’s in the perfume business.

And, in a theory so improbable it might just be used in the fourth season of Heroes:

Theory: The guy we know as Adrian Veidt was not only Ozymandias, but also The Minuteman’s Hooded Justice.

Bear with me.

Given: Hooded Justice and Captain Metropolis did have a romantic relationship.

Given: No one, except possibly Captain Metropolis, has ever seen Hooded Justice without his mask.

OK. So, when The Comedian is hunting down Hooded Justice later for HUAC, he actually ends up falling in love with him instead. [Right, I forgot. The Comedian is gay too. Incidentally, I used to see him at The Eagle on Wednesday nights.]

OK, so, to start a new life together, they fake Hooded Justice’s death, going so far as to plant the dead body of Rolf Müller so that the case would seem closed. Hooded Justice creates the new identity of Adrian Veidt (dba Ozymandias). He even pretends to have been born in 1939, the same year that The Minutemen were formed. [Incontrovertible evidence.]

Years later Captain Metropolis tries to woo Ozymandias back by forming a new crime-fighting team. Ozymandias is disgusted by Captain Met’s growing racist tendencies and tells him that he never wants to see him again. Even so, this causes a rift between Ozymandias and The Comedian, resulting in domestic-partner-icide.

That theory is impenetrable, but please feel free to try to de-bunk it in the comments. Do you have anything else to add to the Ozymandias-Might-Be-Gay list?
