September 23rd, 2008Heroes “The Second Coming”
It’s been a little over 10 months, but Heroes returned to the small screen last night. Even if you consider the webisodes part of the small screen, I’m excluding them, because, frankly, they were pretty awful.
We’ll be talking about “The Second Coming” in episode 36 later this week, but I wanted to post a few notes about the characters here in the meantime. Overall, I thought this was a successful premiere, and the writers did a great job of easing us back into the story after such a long break. I’m easily amused, though, and the complaints (especially concerning time travel) are already appearing elsewhere online. I’d love to hear what you all think about Heroes as a whole and this episode in particular.
If you haven’t seen the episode and don’t want to know anything, don’t click through. Everyone else should feel free to comment without fear of spoiling. The latecomers have been warned!
[SPOILERS AND TWO-MINUTE REPLAY CLIP AHEAD]
Hiro Nakamura (and Ando Masahashi)
Note to George Lucas: this is how you do comic relief. I’m sure it’s a matter of personal taste, but I haven’t gotten sick of these two yet. Hiro’s innocence and exuberance for everything continue to add a spark of fun to a world that’s always one step away from apocalypse. His coy and sneaky response to Ando (”I stop time and teleport. I do a lot of things you don’t know about.”) was my favorite line in the episode.
Also:
- Ando gets Sith powers in the future?
- Speedster girl is a fun adversary for Hiro, and it was really cute when he called her “Nemesis”.
- George Takei’s appearance, though small, was entertaining as always. (”I asked you not to open the safe.”)
Sylar
The greatest mystery is finally revealed: Sylar does not eat his victims’ brains.
Claire: “Are you going to eat it?”
Sylar: “Eat your brain? Claire, that’s disgusting.”
He’d be an uninteresting, nearly invincible character if he hadn’t lost all his stolen powers, but I hope the rest of the season isn’t primarily about him stealing more abilities and building himself back up. If I read the foreshadowing right, he’s going to build up a team of villains this time instead. Also, it looked like Ma Petrelli had at least some power over him at the end. Every good villain should be vulnerable to at least one other character to make for an engaging story.
Peter Petrelli
First impression: He’s wearing a lot more clothing this time around. He’s also getting a little too powerful to remain interesting, but I’m sure they’ll fix that in the next few episodes. Oh, and he was the one who shot Nathan, but I’m already bored with that sub-plot. I think the writers are too.
Nathan Petrelli
Now he’s seen God, and God looks like Dr. Tolian Soran. So, did Linderman somehow heal and psychically project himself into Nathan’s brain or is the elder Petrelli pulling a Hurley?
Matt Parkman
When he woke up in the desert and heard the turtle’s thoughts, I pondered, “This should be cheesy, but somehow it’s not. And what a great development in his power! I mean, he’s not really hearing the words, it’s just the way they’re representing his ability on screen.” Then I realized it was just a throwaway joke/misunderstanding, and I was sad.
Niki / Jessica / Gina /Tracy
I have no idea what’s going on here, but she has always confused me a little. Maybe I need to re-watch last season.
Mohinder Suresh
He finally stopped narrating (mostly) and got some powers of his own. He’s also picked up the slack for Peter in the running-around-shirtless-and-oily department. I thought he became kind of a creep after he injected himself, though. Roid rage, anyone? And was that a scale he picked off himself at the end or just something scabby?
Claire Bennet
I wanted to see her get hit by the train. Not because I don’t like her, but because that would have been cool. At least we got to see her head chopped off in the dream sequence. And Adam Monroe was there, and Niki/Jessica/Gina/Tracy was there, and was that Matt’s dad?
Elle Bishop
I didn’t like her at all last season, but now I want to see her kick some ass and electrocute more people.
Maya Herrera
I thought she died last season. Really. In Isaac’s studio. I’d better re-watch that.
Angela Petrelli
I really like this character. Her whole essence is summed up in her cold question to Future-Peter: “What did you do to my son?” Isn’t he her son too? Not to this barracuda in lipstick, he ain’t.
Other Cast
Both Micah and Molly are tucked safely away. Are they facing the same dilemma as Walt on Lost? Maybe Micah is now as tall as Jake Sisko in DS9 season 7.
Newcomers this episode included Francis Capra and, believe it or not, William Katt in a guest appearance. [Cue foghorn.] I’m so confused about Niki/Jessica/Gina/Tracy that I’m not sure whether she has freezing powers or if Katt’s character can freeze himself and shatter at will as an escape mechanism. Kind of like a lizard dropping its tail.
What are your thoughts? I’ve warned people who haven’t seen it to look away, so spoil away in the comments.

It appears I’m one of the few people who never thought he was eating brains but rather looking at them to see how they function. Like how he looked at clocks and figured out what was wrong with them and if you forgive the pun - how to make them tick.
On a whole, I thought it was a good premiere, am equally confused about the Jessica/Niki/whoever she is issue, and digging all the ex-Veronica Mars people showing up.

Also - why is NBC geoblocking us Canadians? We have NBC up here…

I think they only interested development is that Sylar doesn’t eat the brains of this victims to get his powers. He just takes apart the brain and “figure out” how the powers are manifested? Claire survives because she can’t die because of her healing powers. So couldn’t he have just taken Matt’s telepathic powers in order to get into the brains of the people with powers, and replicate them without slicing their head off?

I kind of hated it, except for Nathan (but he’s always been complicated and unpredictable) and the Hiro/Ando/Daphne part of the story. Things got better after the prison break. And while I’m all for shirtless Mohinder, I really wish Maya had died last season, or been played by a better actress this whole time. There was NO chemistry and the whole thing felt forced and uncomfortable.

Now that there’s a day’s worth of reviews, it seems like I’m the only one who actually liked the premiere. :D Man, people love to complain.
I don’t think that anyone has thought Sylar was eating brains since season 1, but I remember it being a big question when he was still a minor villain. His reaction to Claire’s question was fun, though.
Killervirgo: Maybe he has to physically touch things to know how they work? I can’t remember off-hand. I’m really wishing I had watched a few episodes from previous seasons before jumping back in!
Megh: Maybe that’s why I thought she had died last season? Wishful thinking? A lot of people are saying that Hiro’s otaku thing is getting old, but I still enjoy him. Check back in with me after three or four more episodes, though.
A lot of people also seem upset that Ma Petrelli is suddenly worried about the future. Wasn’t she trying to blow everything up just a while back?
The way I see it, she was only trying to bring about a temporary disaster which she saw as a necessary step toward a brighter future. This new future that she sees is just dark with no horizon in sight. And she wants to stop it. IMHO.

Maybe my expectations were too high; S1 was great, S2 was okay, but there was all this buzz that they were going to pick things up, so I expected this amazing, guns-a-blazing beginning. Instead I felt like I was watching a clip show of all the ideas they had for S3.
I have at least one friend who feels exactly the same as you, Lee.

You’re on to something, though.
Some of these stories were supposed to be in the never-finished last half of S2, but the writers’ strike got in the way.
Maybe they tried to squeeze in too much in the first two hours to make up for lost time? Are you going to keep watching?
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:53 pm
I am. I figure I’ll stick around for at least the first half of the season. If they can’t get their act together by then, it might be harder to keep up. And I was genuinely interested in a couple of the story lines by the last half of the second episode, so I consider it very possible that they will get their groove back. (And maybe Mohinder will kill Maya in the process of whatever the hell is going on with him. That’s a possibility to look forward to.)

maya did die. But sylar forced mohinder to use claire’s blood and he revived her, then he stole the blood and healed himself.
I also loved the second coming! Nathan’s off his rocker (Love the actor but disapointed in his character). The whole story line of this year seems so cool! flip the characters you love and see why they think the way they think. cool!
Claire is interesting (did wanna see her get hit too) hey, what happened to flying guy 2 (claire’s bf)?
Elle has finally become interesting and her father’s power is revealed (didn’t like him).
Nikki is just out there, i don’t have a clue about that.
Loved matt and the turtle, and then the black guy.
Mohinder, I assume there was to chemistry because his upgrade lowers his and others inhibitions…
Angela’s power is finally revealed and is kinda cool and her and sylar will be an interesting twist.
And i seriously like the twist with peters character. Tried to do the right thing and ended up f***ing with everything.
Hiro and co. are kinda cool, loved the Nemesis

Oh, that’s right about Maya… Thanks for the reminder!
They showed Elle’s dad’s power once before, but it was a just a quick mention. I don’t even remember the context. I think he was explaining where the company got its startup money.
The best I can figure on Niki:
Either: she has lots of abilities and has split her consciousness (and distributed the powers) as a coping mechanism.
Or: her ability is the split personalities with different abilities. Is that a meta-ability?
About Mohinder: I was assuming he was like a Taltos (it’s on the brain) in that his new powers included a sort of charm that made people want him. That or Maya just likes oily, shirtless guys.

What I’m thinking with Tracy is that shes actually a different person. I mean,
A) Nikki’s died
B) Nikki did have Jessica as a sister, (but she died) so could there be 3 of them? Maybe they were twins.
C) Nikki never had any other powers than Super strength, but shes had like, 3 personalities.
but I may be wrong.
but I may be right, stranger things have happened.
September 24th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Cody: Do yo think there could be multiple copies of Nikki throughout the world (a la Multiple Man in X-men)? FuturePeter was able to hide PresentPeter in someone else body. So I am thinking the same power was used to put Jessica/Gina into Nikki but there are other copies floating around.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Idk if its that complicated.
Very well could be though.
I just thought it was as simple as twins, or triplets, or sextuplets, haha! who knows.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
the freezing would explain how she got out of the house, but not how she got over the virus… gah! so confusing! we will have to wait to see how long she has been working for the governor (there was a timeskip but i donno how long)
West! that was claire’s new boyfriends name.
