July 2nd, 2008Episode 31: Unintentionally Whedon
We didn’t mean to do it, but Joss Whedon turns up a lot in this week’s episode:
- Headlines: Sarah Michelle Gellar’s favorite male roles, Doctor Horrible gets a trailer
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8, Volume 2: “No Future for You” and “Anywhere but Here”
- The Astonishing X-Men: Volume 4; Also Whedon.
- Pride High; No Whedon.
- Doctor Who: “Silence in the Library”
- Solar Flare; Yeah we also found a Whedon reference there somehow.
- Wonder Showzen
- Frameline: The Polymath, or, The Life and Opinions of Samuel R. Delany, Gentleman
- The 9 Greatest Bi and Gay Female Characters in the Sci-Fi/Geek World
All this and Marc’s tour of San Francisco comics shops.
In case you haven’t seen it, here’s the trailer for Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog that we mention in the episode:

Great episode, guys! I’m a Whedon fan, and I was overjoyed when Buffy Season 8 first hit the stands. Thanks for the Pride High shout-out!

Excellent vlog, as always.
Your description (the show itself notsomuch) of Wonder Showzen reminded me of happy tree friends, which is sick beyond the telling of it.
This might be beyond your comfort level for sick (it’s extreme cartoon violence), but I thought I’d share.

Another great episode, made even shinier with the Whedon emphasis :)
I’m doing what I can to spread the word about Dr. Horrible–shockingly enough, a number of my friends hadn’t heard about the show. The trailer was enough to ensnare them, though.
Re: the vlog, have you considered making it a downloadable podcast? Watching The Angry Puppy would make the train ride into work that much more entertaining.

So I have a couple of things to point out. First off I was wondering if you guys catch the writter at the beginning of Doctor Who episodes but Steven Moffat, who is taking it over, wrote Blink and the Silence in the Library Arc. I think they are three of my favorite Doctor Who stories.
Also Brian K. Vaughn is one of the best comic writters out there, and his faith story was amazing. That beginning was horrifying and compelling. I bought the individuals of all of 1-11. 11 is one of the closest things to a new Buffy episode ever printed.

Antonio - Thanks! I try to watch legally, but the episodes are so delayed over here. It makes it hard to remain legit! :)
Tommy - Thanks for putting out such a great comic! You may have noticed we’ve been out of town (etc.) for the past couple of weeks, but I forwarded your new stuff to Marc this morning. I’ll respond ASAP!
Stephen - Not beyond my comfort level at all. ;) Happy Tree Friends was one of the first video podcasts I ever subscribed to. Thanks for the reminder.
Pollitt - Probably more administrative info than you care for, but: we have an agreement with AfterElton that they get the vlog for a week before we do anything else with it. I toyed with putting it out as a podcast (like we do for my other vlog Homophonic), but the episodes would be really stale by the time they got published. We’re late enough as it is. ;)
Bill - In the last year I really started paying more attention to particular writers of particular episodes. Moffat wrote some of my favorites too. It’s amazing what a good (or bad) writer can do to a franchise in just one episode.
Brian K. Vaughn = Yes, yes, yes.
