Some of these people and characters have multiple geek credentials, but to save space, I just credited each with the first thing that came into my head. If you think I chose the wrong one for your favorite, let us know in the comments.
Voting will continue until May 30. Be sure to tune in to Episode 29 on June 6 to see the results!

Way to make things really difficult. This list clearly demonstrates that we need a Hot Geek 100. 10 is too few.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:00 am
I got done checking about 12 guys only to find out… you can only check 3. Three? Omigosh. That’s about impossible.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:37 am
Why is Jamie Bamber not on the list!?!? Apollo is a total hottie!
May 16th, 2008 at 9:40 am
Wow. That was a lot harder than I thought it would be…
…bum bum tish.
May 16th, 2008 at 9:54 am
10 is too few a number indeed.
May 16th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Tyler, Jamie Bamber is definitely hot but there’s not evidence that either he or his character is a geek.
May 16th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Awesome list, and I concur that choosing three is no easy task. Great job guys. One small teeny tiny disappointment to not see Tricia Helfer or Tahmoh Penikett on there. TH was a supermodel turned automaton…nuff said. and TP is just so gosh damn dreamy. To Tyler, don’t forget Helo beat out Apollo in the boxing match in Season 3. Trump Card :)
Less DW/TW cast and more BSG!
May 16th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
This was too difficult! I had to go a bit nostalgic, but since they’re still hot to me after all these years… I had to choose who I chose.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
barcelono… again, this is a GEEK list. No matter how hot they are, the geek credentials for Tricia Helfer and Tahmoh Penikett are rather suspect.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
In terms of geek credentials, some of the names on this list shouldn’t be there, IMO of course.
For example, I’ve never regarded Ben Browder (a.k.a. John Crichton on Farscape) as any sort of geek/nerd at all, in terms of the characters he plays or in real life. However, he *IS* reputedly a huge sci fi fan, so I suppose that could be considered a geek/nerd trait.
John Barrowman’s Jack Harkness character never came across as a geek to me. He seems more like the Errol Flynn/Han Solo swashbuckler-type of character rather than a cerebral introverted science buff like Ianto, Toshiko or Owen. But there’s lots of evidence, via YouTube, that John Barrowman in real life is a true geek, from collecting action figures to being able to vocalize the Doctor Who theme song.
Adam Baldwin has been cast in lots of sci fi & fantasy genre tv and film but never as geeky or nerdy characters. I really have a hard time thinking of him as a geek.
Neither Ryan Reynolds nor David Duchovny come across as geeks to me, whether via their roles or in real life. Mulder is an FBI agent who into conspiracy theories but being either of those does not automatically confer geekdom. Let’s face it - Scully is 10x the geek that Mulder will ever be. And most of Ryan Reynold’s roles scream frat boy or slacker to me, not geek. His Hannibal King character is so not a geek.
And Michael Vartan as a geek? Puhleeze! He’s always been a jock.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Tyler - Jamie Bamber was nominated! Somehow he fell off my list. Hmmm. I can’t add him now, but we’ll make it up to him. More later.
Barcelono - There are a few people I would have liked to have seen, but no one nominated them. I didn’t want to curate the nominations, since it’s supposed to reflect what Angry Puppy viewers/readers think.
RJ - These are just the nominations. People who aren’t “geek” enough will get filtered out by the voters. Though we did leave “geek” as open as possible. People like Adam Baldwin, while not geeky when playing, say Jayne Cobb on Firefly, earn some geek cred (IMHO) just by being cast in a show like that.
Of course, I’d like to see actual gay geek characters or actors win, but that’s just me. We’ll see what AP viewers think in a couple of weeks!
Oh, and thanks for giving it so much actual thought. ;) Are you an AfterElton reader or did you find us somewhere else?
To all who think it’s tough to decide: Yes, maybe next year we’ll do it AfterElton-style, meaning everyone just submits their own top ten and we tally the results. That’s more labor-intensive on my end, though, and I’m behind on my DVR already! :P
May 16th, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Not to sound completely psycho (probably too late), but if anyone is curious about John Barrowman’s geek credentials, ask me. I’ve read the book and all.
On the other hand, as much as I adore Gareth David-Lloyd, I don’t see either him or Ianto as a geek. In real life, GDL is in a blues band, likes to tell (really) dirty jokes, and wears his pants with two inches of boxer sticking out (and he has a really crap MySpace layout, and claims he doesn’t know how to adjust the settings). Ianto is very clever, but not necessarily geeky. He didn’t build his cyber girlfriend, he only rescued her. Then again, he did coin “Risen Mitten”.
If the list was separated into fictional geeks and real life geeks, it would probably be easier to choose.
May 16th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
I’m RJ on AfterElton as well.
Heh, I think I was the first one to nominate you and Marc for the Hot Geek 10. I see you’ve removed yourselves from consideration. Oh well, you guys will always be honorary Hot Geek charter members in my and no doubt many others’ minds. ;)
May 16th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
3 is so not enough. iv just had to toss a coin between toshiko and micheal shanks! you guys are making me die a little inside……
May 17th, 2008 at 9:23 am
I agree with RJ. I definitely would have voted for Marc and Lee had they been on the list! I guess they’re just too hot to handle! haha
May 17th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Wow - I’m surprised Alexis Denisof (Wesley Wyndahm Price from “Angel”) didn’t make the list. Total geek hotness there!!!
Gotta agree with Captain Jack not being a geek and Jamie Bamber is a loss. Let me make it up to him!
May 19th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
true true Helo is no geek. However one of the six copies Gina was a gay network admin aboard the Pegasus. Let alone that Caprica Six had the know how to infiltrate the defense mainframe, Tricia Helfer’s characters have at least some geek cred. She was on Supernatural too according to wikipedia, not sure if that would be relevant. Real life Tricia, I doubt a farm girl supermodel would qualify.
Nonetheless, that’s a very comprehensive list you got there, well rounded!
May 21st, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Craig Kelly over Aidan Gillen?? Gimme some Aidan!
Also, Ira Glass’ hotness is way underrated! Hipster, nerd, intellectual, public radio hot.
May 23rd, 2008 at 6:27 am
I didn’t notice that Naoko Mori was on there! I would have voted for her!
I went for Gareth David-Lloyd, John Barrowman and Violet Blue.
May 23rd, 2008 at 7:19 am
Jack Harkness is a little bit of a techno-geek, and John Barrowman is the ultimate geek. He just happens to be a charming, attractive, popular one. He happily confesses he’s a huge sci-fi/DoctorWho/gadget/action-figure/ Torchwood geek.
I mean he owns his own pair of Transformer pajamas (neatly ironed), he’s simply one hot 41 year old geek. He deserves to win, without a shadow of a doubt.
Tennant and Gareth David Loyld have certainly not yet reached his levels yet, give them a few more year.
May 23rd, 2008 at 9:00 am
You really should change Christopher Gorham show reference to Henry Grubstick, Ugly Betty since he is about to go into Season 3 on that show.
May 23rd, 2008 at 9:06 am
I’m with the others. *ONLY THREE!!!????!!!* ::grin:: SO many on there that would, imho, that would classify as “Hot Geeks” either by character listed (Richard Dean Anderson as McGyver) or by the person (John Barrowman) that it was really hard to choose. I’m looking forward to seeing what the final count is.
thanks for running this.
May 23rd, 2008 at 9:34 am
I miss David Hewlett as Rodney McKay from Atlantis. I couldn´t decide between Ben Browder, Robert Downey Jr. and John Simm, but I have a weakness for John Simm, so it´s him :-)
May 23rd, 2008 at 11:02 am
Barrowman is definatly a geek, as is Tennant (though mainly Doctor Who and random gleeful stuff), so that’s good. The top ten at this moment definatly deserve where they are.
May 23rd, 2008 at 11:02 am
Uh oh. The David Tennant fangirls found out about this poll and that Tennant wasn’t winning. I found a link to this poll on the livejournal community 10thdoctor. That’s how he jumped ahead to #1 so fast.
May 23rd, 2008 at 12:11 pm
please vote hammond!!!
May 23rd, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Looks like the Supernatural fans found it too.
May 23rd, 2008 at 3:29 pm
The fangirls have taken over Angry Puppy: I saw the poll linked on an LJ fan group for John Barrowman, and another for Gareth David-Lloyd, with mention of it having been posted on a Doctor Who/Tennant group. And I’m guessing the Supernatural fans heard about it today as well.
Probably two weeks for voting, in this particular instance, was too big a window.
May 23rd, 2008 at 5:58 pm
I’ve got nothing against Eric Millegan, but I was a bit disappointed to see him nominated and TJ Thyne not.
May 23rd, 2008 at 6:01 pm
Dude! Where is Milo Ventimiglia on your list!
May 24th, 2008 at 4:23 am
JARED PADALECKI 4EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 24th, 2008 at 9:18 am
I’m almost reconsidering my vote for Zachary Quinto and maybe even John Barrowman, there are so many many choices. People I forgot I even loved. Who knew I had such fond memories of Gordon Michael Woolvett. This whole list kept making me go, oh I love him, no I love him, no her, he’s really great, remember how awesome he was. There should totally be a hot geek 100, or at the very least a hot geek 50.
I’ll also second the disappointment that Alexis Denisof didn’t make the cut. But then again there are so many good choices I don’t know that I would have been able to vote for him.
TJ Thyne rocks my socks, but Eric Millegan is out, so obviously he gets extra points for this list. Also, before looking at their imdb pages two second ago, how much did I not think TJ Thyne was younger than Eric Millegan. I always liked him on Bones, but I suddenly have this whole new appreciation of Eric Millegan and his baby baby face.
I kinda wish a different role had been chosen for Justin Theroux. Perhaps his part as Simon in Alias, or for more recent stuff as John Hancock in John Adams (not strictly a geek part, but in a miniseries with civics geek appeal). Perhaps in Michael Showalter’s classic (and personal favorite of mine) The Baxter. Not to mention his character in The Broken Hearts Club was pretty nerdy. Too much thought for someone who isn’t going to win and who I didn’t vote for?
Adam Baldwin, is a total self confessed geek even if the characters he plays are not. It’s not a coincidence that he gets cast in stuff like Firefly and Chuck.
Anyway, Tennant for the win. He’s a total geek who plays a geek who happens to be the main character of one of the geekiest shows of all time. He’s got the geek holy grail. Did I mention he’s also totally hot too. Go David Tennant!
May 24th, 2008 at 10:33 am
The fact that Jared Padalecki is ahead of Ianto AND the Doctor is just wrong… Just my opinion
May 24th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
fangirls you say? *sigh* I feel so violated haha.
May 24th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Oh the poll has been hijacked by fangirls. Pity.
Wish I had an screencap of how things were 48 hours ago, before the invasion.
May 24th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
How does the Angry Video Game Nerd only have four votes? Come on, people, have you SEEN that new Indiana Jones review?
BULLWHIP!!
Regardless, I’m glad he’s at least nominated. :)
May 24th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Wonder if I should give the heads up for this poll to the Daniel Jackson/Michael Shanks fan sites? :P
Another problem is that some folks may have figured out that one can vote more than once just by using different computers since voters are not required to be registered.
May 25th, 2008 at 2:22 am
Ok …… Seriously ……. where’s Nathan Fillion?? He’s a HUGE geek - not only for being the Captain on Firefly - but in real life Nathan Fillion has every new gaget out there - and he’s a voice in Halo 3 - read his blog about how excited he was waiting for the iPhone to be released? How geeky is that?? c’mon - add late in the game and I bet he’s still got a shot at winning - he’s an awesome geek
May 25th, 2008 at 4:48 am
You girls who are complaining about people not being on the poll should start watching the vlog. Marc and Lee are awesome, and then you’d know that all the nominees were picked a couple weeks ago by people who read the blog and watch the show. You could have been there! You can be in the future!
May 25th, 2008 at 9:05 am
emily deschanel as Temperance Brennan on Bones has to be on that list! HOT FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGIST = very HOT GEEK! ^_^
May 25th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Where’s Tobey Maguire? He’s like King of the Hot nerds. Virtually every character he plays is a nerd and Spiderman is like one of the hottest nerds around. I am however extremely happy that Robert Downey Jr has a high number on the list. I don’t get Jared Padalecki though…he doesn’t seem nerdy to me but I don’t watch Supernatural so maybe he has become a nerd since Gilmore Girls.
May 26th, 2008 at 1:49 am
Why so few girls? I mean, I know there are usually fewer women than men on any given TV show/movie, but come on. That ratio up there is ridiculous.
May 26th, 2008 at 3:09 am
Jared’s character on supernatural is quite nerdy at times. He is super smart and knows random facts about many weird things, as Sam’s brother Dean says on the show “you’re like a walking encyclopedia of weirdness”. Also Jared considers himself a bit of a geek in real life.
May 26th, 2008 at 7:08 am
Bailey - Most of our viewers are gay men and some straight women. So, um, well, not hard to figure that one out…
May 26th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Jared Padalecki forever
May 26th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Bailey… what Lee said. Although I should have remembered Emily Deschanel as Dr. Temperance Brennan on Bones.
Also forgot Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars herself!!!), Allison Mack (Chloe Sullivan on Smallville), Tina Majorino (Cindy ‘Mac’ Mackenzie on Veronica Mars), Keegan Connor Tracy (Dr. Diane Hughes on Jake 2.0), Kandyse McClure (Petty Office Anastasia Dualla on Battestar Galactica), Rachel Weisz (Evelyn Carnahan on The Mummy & The Mummy Returns), Maria Bello (Evelyn Carnahan O’Connell on The Mummy 3), Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine on Star Trek Voyager), Roxann Dawson (B’Elanna Torres on Star Trek Voyager), Jolene Blalock (T’Pol on Star Trek Enterprise), Linda Park (Hoshi Sato on Star Trek Enterprise), Terry Farrell (Jadzia Dax on Star Trek Deep Space Nine - Marc & Lee, how could you have let us forget Terry Farrell???), Nicole de Boer (Ezri Dax on Star Trek Deep Space Nine), Marina Sirtis (Counsellor Deanna Troi on Star Trek TNG), Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher on Star Trek TNG), Renee O’Connor (Gabrielle on Xena: Warrior Princess), Tia Carrere (Sydney Fox on Relic Hunter), Amy Acker (Winifred ‘Fred’ Burkle on Angel), Freema Agyeman (Martha Jones on Doctor Who), Sigourney Weaver (Ellen Ripley in Alien; Gwen DeMarco in Galaxy Quest).
OMG! Look at all the hot geek women we left off the list!
May 26th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
JARED! JARED! JARED!
May 27th, 2008 at 2:50 am
VOTE AVGN! WE LOVE YOU JAMES!
May 27th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Is there any way to go back to before the weekend invasion and just tally the first week’s numbers?
May 28th, 2008 at 1:31 am
Jared, as Sam, of course. There is no hotter geek out there.
–Dee
May 28th, 2008 at 7:29 am
I’m so relived we get to hear the results before and after 1000+ fanboi takeover! I do want to see what the final tally is, but I’m much more interested in the angry puppy viewers list! Hope that wasn’t too difficult to figure out but thanks for doing it!
May 28th, 2008 at 11:07 am
What happened to this poll? It feels so violated. Im glad too to see the results pre takeover.
May 30th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
I definitely vote for Jared, as Sam Winchester! He’s hot and he’s a geek. What more could you ask for??
