Thank Gods I Play Xbox

May 13th, 2008 by Lee

Weird PS3 AdI don’t generally post pictures of gratuitously naked chaps here. Sure, it would probably increase click-throughs, but do we really need to see a picture of Hugh Jackman shirtless on the beach to talk about the upcoming Wolverine movie?

In this case, though, the picture is the story.

I honestly don’t know if this Austrian ad is NSFW or not, as technically there’s no nudity. If you’re in a liberal sort of place, click through to see why I am glad I prefer Xbox today.

I’m not quite sure what it is they’re trying to achieve, so I can’t really say if I think they’re successful.

I did have to look at it for about a minute before I figured out what was going on though. But it doesn’t make me anymore enthused to buy a playstation.

Not only is the guy not hot, but the ad makes no sense whatsoever. I’ve always been opposed to ads only vaguely, tangentially related to the product or target audience, but the execution here is so much worse than anything I’ve ever seen from the gaming community.

RE:shirtless Hugh Jackman. Yes. Yes we do.

On topic: Wtf? I had to read the comments to figure out that he wasn’t just some strange, sadly endowed little man, hiding in shadows. (He’s more of a sad, strangely endowed man.) He looks ashamed to play PS3.

Off off topic: Terry Farrell and Gareth David-Lloyd are going to be at Polaris 22 in Toronto, July 11-13. I wouldn’t bother telling you like this, but Ianto *and* Jadzia freakin’ Dax!? I immediately thought of you guys.

Okay, I’ve asked my sister, and all she can come up with is ‘games are better then sex’ as the message..

    Which, just… No.

Really WuBomei? Awesome. I need to get ontop of all the Ontario conventions happening this summer. Thanks for the heads up.

I sent this ad to my marketing professor along with the message WTF. I thought he may shed some light on European marketing ideas since he’s from Germany (close enough to Austria right?). He is just as perplexed as we are.

actually it is quite simple. its an allusion to playboys (think playgirl, only masculine). boys who play playstation can be thought of as play(boys). so if a playstation boy is a sex playboy, why wouldnt his “little” head be a thumb?

the ad is clever but it doesnt come off well…

(sorry guys I keep to the KISS rule, so no offense)
