March 18th, 2008Happy (Belated) Pi Day
Well, we missed Pi Day, which, for the curious, is on March 14th each year (3.14, ha, ha, ha).
I was reminded of it when a friend (thanks, Adam!) sent this webcomic from the series Toothpaste for Dinner. The strip (intentionally or not?) covers stuff of geek interest, so be sure to click through.

I am happy to admit that I’m in the “enough for most scientists” range, though I have no idea why 3.14159 is still in my head after all these years but not 3.141592.

I spent my pi day writing a math mid-term. I have a feeling that my prof thought he was being funny. I know it up to the 2 but only because the pi button on my calculator tells me it up to that point.

Alistair, you win the geek prize this week. Or is that nerd?
There was an article about the distinction somewhere online earlier this week.

I must admit I actually know 3.1415926 by heart. But I think it’s cooler to know algorithms to calculate pi based on toothpicks.
