January 27th, 2008The Midnight Meat Train (Is Not Gay Porn)
The Midnight Meat Train, based on a Clive Barker short story of the same name, is an upcoming horror flick about a photographer’s obsession with a serial killer who stalks and butchers late-night subway commuters. The cast includes Bradley Cooper, Brooke Shields and Welsh ex-footballer Vinnie Jones (Juggernaut, X-Men: The Last Stand) as Mahogany, the serial killer.
Obviously, I haven’t seen this yet, but there are a couple of awkward points here: the setting and the name.
Originally set in NYC (creepy subways), production woes have re-set the film in LA (not-so-creepy subways). But I have faith in the miracles of modern movie-making.
The name, while fine for a short story, does seem kind of cheesy for a horror flick. Screenwriter Jeff Buhler reportedly wanted to change it because he thought that it sounded too much like a gay porn and would turn off potential viewers. Note to Mr. Buhler, if no one sees your movie, it’s not because they thought it was gay porn.
The Midnight Meat Train is scheduled for wide release on May 16.
