January 3rd, 2008GAF #2: Jadzia Dax
We recently named Jadzia Dax our #1 Character We Most Want To Party With, and even her action figure makes us happy!
Forget about the fact that without her, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine would be about as fun as a space mall; taken in her own right she’s spent over 300 years as both a man and a woman and done everything imaginable.
She’s also the most interesting addition to the Gallery of Gay Action Figures on account of her sexuality being the most complicated. Jadzia Dax is a male symbiote currently residing in a female body, but because she carries the memories and experiences of her seven previous hosts (male and female) and is attracted to both genders, Dax qualifies as both bisexual and transgender.

I just want to say I’m so sorry for the loss of your puppy :( It will be sad not to see anymore pictures of him playing video games with you guys!
Also, I just watched your most recent vlog, and I just thought I would mention that my father is a huge Stargate SG-1 fan. I don’t watch it that much, but from I have seen, the characters seem to have more of a distinction to them than what Lee mentioned with the cast of Stargate Atlantis. My father was also a fan of the original movie, so maybe SG-1 would be more your style, if you haven’t already seen it.
Thanks for the suggestion of “Ted” as a good first-episode-to-watch for Buffy. I’ll have to rent or buy the second season and see for myself :)

Thanks, Madison. It’s definitely quieter around here these days.
About Stargate: I admit that it’s impossible to get a good sense of a whole series from two episodes. I’ve pledged to Marc that I’m going to watch the entire franchise from beginning to end, though I might have to do it alone. I expect to finish the wole thing sometime next year. ;)

I cant say I ever particularly warmed to jadzia, the character herself was interesting but Terry Farrels acting left something to be desired. Now ezri dax on the other hand, loooove her.
And as for stargate, the first 5 seasons were pretty great but once it went to SciFi it became Andromeda 2.0 with its bigger emphasis on huge cgi battles and repetative storylines.
Sorry about your dog, when my cat died last year it got me pretty damn hard :( :(

Mary, I feel the reverse about the DS9 Daxes, but by chance I’m just about to re-watch season 7, so I’m going to try to see Ezri as a new character - not as a replacement for Dax. Maybe I’ll warm up to her?
In a related note, there was an article on io9 last week called “Science Proves That Drinking Makes You Horny”. The image they chose to accompany the article? (Jadzia) Dax in a cocktail dress with a glass of what I’m sure isn’t synthehol.

I too am rewatching ds9 and am only up to the end of the 5th season, and I guess her character is not as bad as I remember her being, there are still some real cringe worthy moments that are more to do with the actress then jadzia(not that im saying the other actors are oscar worthy they all have there pretty bad moments except for garaks actor whi is pretty ace from the very beginning)

Season 5 is a great turning point for DS9 - that’s where it becomes my favorite Star Trek series actually. You didn’t love the scene where Jadzia takes Worf’s Klingon operas as a “threat” to make him come home from a dangerous mission to the Gamma Quadrant? (She’s really bad at keeping track of things, and he’s afraid he won’t get the collection back intact.)
I think Terry Ferrell is one of the best actors on the show (but she hasn’t been in much else since, so maybe I’m way off). I agree 100% about Garak. I love the character and the actor.
We’re going to do a feature on the worst casting in sci fi, and I am certain there will be at least one major DS9 character on there…
